Navigating the Recruitment Landscape: Will Recruiters Call to Reject?

Updated: Jul 20, 2023

Will recruiters call to reject

As the Founder and Lead Talent Partner at Tabata Search, I've had the honor of working with retail and consumer sector leaders such as Williams-Sonoma, Gap Inc., Charming Charlie, Destination Maternity, Tiffany & Company, and Bulgari. My enriching tenure at Korn Ferry allowed me to navigate the many nuances of executive search, including one question that arises frequently among candidates - "Will recruiters call to reject?"

Understanding this aspect of the recruitment process is crucial for managing expectations and fostering a positive job-seeking experience. So, let’s delve into the answer.

The communication methods recruiters use to deliver rejection vary widely based on the recruitment agency’s policies, the stage of the recruitment process, the recruiter's workload, and the relationship built with the candidate. In many cases, recruiters do make phone calls to reject candidates, especially when it comes to executive-level positions or when the candidate has reached the final stages of the recruitment process.

Here are a few reasons why recruiters might choose to call a candidate to deliver a rejection:

Personalized Approach: A phone call offers a more personal, respectful way to deliver the rejection. It provides an opportunity to thank the candidate for their time and effort and to offer valuable feedback, if appropriate.

Professional Relationship: Recruiters understand the value of maintaining good relationships with all candidates, as they could be a potential fit for future opportunities. A phone call helps preserve this relationship.

Feedback Exchange: A call allows the recruiter to provide more detailed feedback and possibly advise the candidate on how to improve for future opportunities. It also provides a platform for the candidate to ask questions or seek further clarification.

However, it's worth noting that not all recruiters call to reject. Due to high volumes of applicants or time constraints, some recruiters may opt for emails or not provide feedback at all, particularly if the candidate was screened out early in the process. It's not indicative of the candidate's worth or capabilities but more a factor of logistical constraints.

At Tabata Search, we value each candidate's journey and believe in open, respectful communication. Our approach is to maintain clear communication lines throughout the process, including delivering rejection news. We recognize the courage it takes to explore new opportunities and believe that every effort deserves recognition and a respectful response.

In conclusion, whether or not a recruiter will call to reject can depend on several factors. As a candidate, it's essential to understand that the method of rejection doesn't reflect your value or potential. The job market is competitive, and rejection is a common part of the process. Each interaction with a recruiter, whether culminating in success or rejection, is an opportunity for growth and learning.

Remember, rejection is not a full stop; it's a comma in the journey towards the right opportunity. As the saying goes, "Every 'No' is one step closer to a 'Yes'." As recruiters, we are here to partner with you on this journey, providing guidance, feedback, and support every step of the way.
